In support of Black History Month
Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a historian and scholar, is the pivotal figure behind the creation of what we now call Black History Month. In the early 20th century, he recognized a critical gap in how Black history was being taught in schools. African American history was either ignored or misrepresented. Woodson, a Harvard-trained historian, wanted to change that, so in 1926, he launched Negro History Week to encourage the study of Black history and the contributions of Black people in shaping American culture and society.
